Underfloor heating Cable from Klima - Common questions
Q. How do I know what size of Underfloor heating cable is required?
A. In a conservatory allow 150 watts per m². The spacer strips are laid at 500/600mm centres across the floor and the underfloor heating cable is run up and down through the spacer strips at 100mm spacing (every 2nd loop on the spacer strips). To ensure you are using the correct cable size, once you have worked out the square metre area and the wattage e.g. 3.5 x 3.0 = 10.5m² x 150 = 1575 watts then cross reference this with the linear metres using the 100mm spacing which would equate to 35 lengths x 3.0m = 105 linear metres so you would use a 1700 watt Klima cable set. If you have too much cable then run the underfloor heating cable through every loop (50mm apart) for some of the runs to take up the excess. Do not cut the cable. The cable should not be altered in any way, as shortening the cable will damage the system. Do not install the cable under appliances or fitted units. Underfloor heating cable removed from original packaging, adjusted or disturbed in any way cannot be returned under any circumstances.
Q. How important is insulation when installing a cable underfloor heating system?
A. Insulation is very important and improves the energy efficiency of any heating system. It is always recommended that underfloor heating is installed on an insulated base for energy efficiency - a heat loss calculation should be made to ascertain heat output requirement, as supplementary heat may be required.
Q. What kind of adhesive must I use?
A. You must always use a flexible tile adhesive and grout which is compatible with floor heating cable systems as described in the instructions when tiling on top of the screed.
Q. What if the underfloor heating cable system fails?
A. The system is tested to between 4,000 and 10,000 volts and therefore will not fail because of a power surge. The only way the system can cease to work is if the cable is cut or damaged. By taking the resistance readings as shown in the instructions then it will indicate that the system is working before, during and after installation.
Q. How long is the guarantee?
A. 10 years for the underfloor heating cable and 2 years for the thermostat.
Q. Do I need an electrician?
A. All electrical work and connections must be undertaken by a qualified electrician in accordance with IEE regulations. Failure to do so may invalidate the guarantee. The instructions have a section, which must have the name, company, address and signature of the electrician.
Q. When can I switch on the Klima cable underfloor heating system?
A. Do not use the underfloor heating system until the screed is completely dry i.e. 1mm per day must be allowed so for a 50mm screed allow 50 days. Do not use the underfloor heating to dry the screed, tile adhesive or grout.
Q. What thickness of screed is required?
A. A minimum of 30mm but preferably 50mm for optimum performance.
Q. How long does the floor take to heat?
A. Because the underfloor heating system will act as a giant storage heater initially it may take several hours to heat up, but once the thermostat is set up then the floor never drops below the setback temperature and will operate at the set comfort temperature during the periods set on the thermostat.
Q. How much does an underfloor heating cable system cost to run?
A. There are varying factors to be taken into consideration i.e. how often you use your heating and what temperature, the insulation used, your electricity tariff etc, for further information please contact a technical advisor.
Q. Is there any maintenance required for the cable underfloor heating system?
A. The system is 100% waterproof and requires no maintenance.
